"John" who supposedly wrote the book of Revelation, is thought to have been exiled on the Mediterranean island of Patmos.
Now, I've been to some Mediterranean Islands, and I've seen wormwood growing there. It is a shrub that yields the hallucinogenic drug thujone, which goes into making the extremely strong alcoholic beverage absinthe - la «fée verte» or the "green fairy", which was made illegal in many countries. But now, regulations regarding absinthe have been relaxed somewhat because modern producers only allow small levels of thujone to be included in commercial absinthe. (And because it makes money.)
I can't help thinking that perhaps the ravings of John "The Divine" in Revelations were inspired by him imbibing too much thujone. Revelations nearly didn't make it into the biblical canon because it was considered by many to be too nuts, and some churches/denominations reject it.
