On "The Gene's-Eye View of Evolution" by J. Arvid Ågren

Aug 10, 2021.

Although Amazon.com says that this title has not yet been released, I received a copy today via Amazon France. I'm really looking forward to devouring it. Dawkins' "The Selfish Gene", published in 1976, transformed my understanding of evolutionary biology, and this work, published by Oxford University Press, promises to update and enhance that understanding.

I immediately note that, in the introduction, Ågren speaks of "teaching the controversy" (over the gene-centric view of evolution) and describes how the intelligent design (ID) enthusiasts' strategy of the same name was purloined by the "Discovery Institute" in an attempt to discredit evolutionary science in general. In fact, it came from secular liberal professor of English, Gerald Graff, and had nothing directly to do with biology at all. Echoes of how they stole Müller's Interlocking Complexity, a prediction of evolutionary principles, to try and attack it by re-branding it as "irreducible complexity", or as one critic termed it, "unlessenable complicatedness".
