Gods all the way up.

The title refers to the problem of infinite regress, exemplified by "Turtles all the way down".

Probably apocryphal, but the story is that of an old lady, a flat-earther, who asked an astronomer who was giving a talk, why we don't fall off a supposedly spherical earth.  He asked, "What holds the earth up? A turtle?" She replied, "You think you think you are clever, young man, but it's obvious. It's turtles all the way down."

If a god is proffered as the creator of the universe, where did this god come from? It must have been created by a god god (following the same 'logic'). Where did this god's god come from? Obviously, a god's god's god, and so on. This sort of reductio ad absurdum should lead people to consider that their basic assumptions must be mistaken.

A good article on this whole sorry mess is to be found on RatonalWiki, at a page entitled "Argument from first cause".

See also, "What is True?" from Richard Dawkins.

"Modern physics teaches us that there is more to truth than meets the eye, or more than meets the all-too-limited human mind, evolved as it was to cope with medium-size objects moving at medium speeds through medium distances in Africa. In the face of these profound and sublime mysteries, the low-grade intellectual poodling of pseudophilosophical poseurs seems unworthy of adult attention."

The world does not owe it to us to conform to our parochial intuitions, and
stuff does seem to appear to come from nowhere, counter to our intuitions.
