These days we have someone elected as president of the U.S.A. getting away with having mocked a disabled reporter. This seems to have set the tone.
I saw this image posted on social media. The comment read,
Atheists: "Atheism is for everyone".
The Atheists.
Now imagine these people's faces blacked up and the image being used to represent 'black' people in general.
There would be an instant baying chorus with cries of "RACISM", and rightly so.
One aspect of racism is to try to apply the same attributes to whole groups of people, groups that are quaintly called "races".
When such aspects are attributed to other types of groups, we call it bigotry.
This usually takes the form of an ad hominem attack. https://yourlogicalfallacyis.com/ad-hominem
I propose that when it is applied to either a faith group or a group with no faith, we call it "faithism". (Theism is already taken.)
To lump such groups together and apply a grab-bag of attributes you do not like is to unjustifiably caricature them as a homogeneous group.
Taking atheists as an example:
You cannot say that all atheists hate God. It's a stupid idea that you can hate something you do not believe is real anyway.
You cannot say that atheism means that you are a communist or even a socialist.
You cannot say that all atheists have the same attitudes to gender, sex, or transgenderism,
or who can compete in which sporting events,
or who can go to which lavatory,
or who can read stories to children,
or which stories.
You cannot say that every atheist has the same opinion about homosexuality,
or abortion.
It is lazy and ignorant, as well as grossly insulting, to say that atheists form such a homogeneous group.
Atheists, this also goes for your attacks on religious groups.
Everyone, write and comment on the issues,
and don't be a sectarian bigot - a faithist.
